Money, clients, freedom (I hated it)
All stories have 2 basic formulas.
But before I show you how to use them to grow your brand and business online, I’m going to reveal how I stumbled upon them in the first place so that you can get a feel for how to use them properly in your business too.
Because depending how you use them, they can either have the intended effect, or the opposite of the intended effect.
Here goes nothing…
At age 5 I was diagnosed with something for which I had no tools or resources for understanding other than, “here, take these pills” (which I ditched at age 15 because I hate pharmaceuticals).
As a result, I struggled for most of my childhood, teenage years, and young adult life.
But at 23 I decided, whatever I missed out on development wise in my early years, I’d more than make up for as an adult through personal development.
Soon my interest in personal development spilled over into my interest in entrepreneurship and business development.
So I tried things like delivering coney dogs to downtown offices by bicycle. Building furniture using traditional Japanese hand tools. And foraging wild food and selling it to local restaurants. But none of it took off until I started my own construction business and hired a coach to help me do it.
Finally, my self-employment began to take shape.
I started making decent money. Had a crew of carpenters. Happy customers. Etc…
But deep down, I was miserable.
The work didn’t light me up. It wasn’t creative. It didn’t use the parts of me that had always driven my curiosity… writing, psychology, healthy living, time in nature, research, and yes, even technology.
Those were the things I couldn’t not do.
It just took me far too long to realize that when you combine them all, you get something that looks a lot like marketing.
For years, I resisted it. Partly because I felt I didn’t know enough to talk about marketing yet. And partly because “marketing” itself sounded sleazy to me.
But once I stopped resisting, and once I allowed myself to see it for what it really is (helping people see the value in things that can change their lives)… that’s when things started opening up for me.
Now I get paid to write and teach marketing online.
And I’ve been much happier.
So that’s my journey so far…
But what about yours?
Well, all stories have 2 basic formulas:
- Something happened to you and something must be done about it.
- You want something badly but are having trouble getting it.
So that’s your story, and more importantly, that’s your readers story too.
And if you follow this formula in your writing, the people you can help the most will start to see themselves in your writing. And you’ll likely have an easier time attracting them and making a bigger impact on their lives.
So that’s it for today…
My weird pricing experiment still stands, if you want something badly in your business and you’re having trouble getting it, and want some outside perspective on your business from me, head on over to the link below to learn more:
