Why I’m stealing ideas from other industries now
Just got off a call with a client who said something that stuck with me:
“This honestly came at the perfect time. Without it, I’d be overwhelmed and dropping the ball like all those other contractors people complain about. Now I have a system that keeps everything organized, and I’m already seeing old opportunities come back to life.”
He works in a completely different industry than most people on this list.
A local stair builder…
And yet, the same digital marketing principles I teach to online business owners applies just as much, if not more to his analog business model.
One thing that’s been reiterated to me by mentors again and again this past year is how much leverage there is in learning from adjacent industries, or even totally different ones.
Personally, I’ve been learning a lot from a Facebook ads expert over the past few months.
And seeing how ads people think has completely changed how I approach organic content.
It’s forced me to be more disciplined, experimental, and scientific about the whole process. And instead of just posting interesting thoughts that come to mind in search of something that sticks, now I’m think more in terms of how intentionally test tiny, but important, variations in what I’m writing.
And it’s also helped me adopt the mindset of testing faster.
The first time I heard about this concept was in Chip & Dan Heath’s book Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work. Which I highly recommend reading by the way…
But the point is, when you only study your own industry, things get incestuous pretty fast.
Everything starts spiraling towards same-ness and it’s a really good idea to look outside your own industry, see how others are approaching things differently, and figure out ways to innovate inside your own industry.
Personally, I plan on making better use of everything I can learn from other industries this year.
And if you’d like to join me, signal your interest for the Client Discovery Lab Cohort that goes live mid-January.
Even if you don’t end up joining, you will get something useful for applying.
Here’s the link to signal interest, and I’ll get you more details between now and January 5th.
Best,
Kevin Hood
