7 ways I grow my email list on Threads
35 years after it became the highest ROI marketing channel in the known digital universe, email is still the most important tool to grow your online business.
But most people might not recognize the underlying strategy behind growing their list on Threads.
It’s not as simple as hard shoving a website link in your bio and calling it a day.
There’s a strategy to it.
So, here’s 7 ways I grow my email list on Threads:
- Link in bio.
Yeah, you should probably put a link in your bio, and like a cobbler who’s children don’t have shoes, I put a direct link to a newsletter opt-in which promises very few benefits, and definitely no freebies. Which is okay, I’m not that concerned about it, but that’s because I’ve built a business around the value of my daily emails.
But for most people, that just won’t fly.
If you focus on coaching, services, courses, etc… in any other niche, directing people to a strategically placed freebie is the way to go.
- “This week on the email list!”
I rarely do this because it means planning out a whole week of emails ahead of time, but it’s surprisingly effective. Since I write daily emails, 5-7 well crafted subject lines in a row create an irresistible amount of curiosity for many people.
If nothing else, people are thinking “What the heck does this even mean?… I’ve got to find out.”
But since I rarely write 5-7 emails in advance, sadly, I’ll probably never make great use of this technique.
- Pre-publish CTA.
One way to make incredible use of your daily or weekly newsletter content, is to tease the content itself inside social media posts.
This creates a unique type of evergreen urgency, where, if you want to read the email or newsletter, you’ve got to subscribe before it goes out. It’s a great way to use urgency to get people to give you a chance.
Just make sure you deliver on the intriguing promise you made inside your content.
- Short-form auto-plugs.
You can’t just post links directly on Threads.
Why?
Because even though they say the algorithm doesn’t penalize posts with links, it does.
Whether that’s just human behavior, or something hard coded by meta doesn’t matter.
If you post a straight link, no one sees it.
So you need to come back later after your short form posts have gained some traction and leave a comment. When you do, your comment becomes the first comment people see when they open the post to leave their own comments.
That’s when you hit ‘em with your CTA to your newsletter or freebie.
You can do this manually.
Or you can do it programmatically with an app called Blacktwist. I use it to schedule all my content on Threads, and they’ve got a feature that allows you automatically follow up on your posts in this fashion after a certain period of time, or number of likes, and more.
Highly recommend it, and if you use the link above, and pay for a subscription I might get affiliate commissions.
And I personally only like giving affiliate commissions to people I know, like and trust so hey, if that’s not me, no worries I totally understand.
- Long-form plugs.
Again, don’t the post the link when you post your post.
Come back and post it later.
But the thing is, long-form posts are the best way to build trust, and get reach with new prospective students, customers, and clients on threads because it’s the only real way to encourage people to spend more time with your content, and demonstrate your skills and experience, in a way that gives value, and builds bonds with your readers.
But there’s one problem…
Writing a good long form post takes time.
And so it’s extra important to make sure that whatever you’re writing about, and whatever your promoting when you come back to plug the post are ultra-relevant.
Again, plug your newsletter opt-in if you must, but it’s even better to have a highly relevant strategic freebie to take your readers educational experience to the next level.
As far as I’m concerned, that’s the absolute best way to bring your readers into your world.
- Comments.
That’s right, comments.
Commenting on other people’s posts is one of the best ways to grow your list, especially early on. Sharing your story in the comments on posts from big accounts will encourage people to come stalk your bio.
But not only that…
Answering people’s questions who are potential students, customers, and clients in your niche.
People ask questions on threads.
So answer them
Give value, then you can direct them to a published blog post to learn more. It’s not an ask, it’s a give. Then all of a sudden they’re on your website thinking about opt-ing it.
This works with a surprising amount of consistency and I highly recommend it.
- DMs.
Yeah, threads finally has a DM feature.
Challenge right now is, it’s only available on the app, and I mostly use Threads on desktop.
So if you ever message me and it takes a year to respond, that’s why.
But never-the-less, occasionally I log into the app and will just DM people who’ve followed me recently and ask what they’re most interested in learning. Most people don’t respond and that’s okay, but I’m not trying to pressure people into booking calls or whatever.
I’m more interested in building relationships and doing market research than anything.
And if I can point people in the right direction to learning more, I will.
It’s quite a bit more rare to get actual opt-ins this way, but I’m all about being social on social media, and I think they weighs more in the eyes of building a real business based on humans, and not on metrics.
Do what doesn’t scale, and you will get what most people won’t.

So that about does it in terms of how I grow my list on Threads.
But by and large, the most effective thing to do is to create a highly effective, highly relevant, highly desirable, highly consumable free asset, and offer it in exchange for people joining your email list.
And most people get this wrong.
I know I did for half a decade.
They make ‘em too long. Or too boring. Or fluffy. Or too basic.
They put a TON of time and effort into it, get a ttached, promote it a little bit, watch it flop, and think what the heck am I doing wrong?
But there is a better way.
And I show you how it’s done in next weeks update of 15 Legendary Writing Secrets.
By the original guide now (15 writing short form writing tips) for only $7, and you’ll get the upgrade free when it’s released next week (positioning, growth strategy, viral content, dozens of examples, list growth strategy, and how to experiment with new or existing offers on threads).
Which, by the way, I just got off a call with one of the coaches from a 7-figure coach builder community I’m in, and she said:
===
“No one is teaching this stuff on Threads…
You could probably charge way more (like $20-$30)… run ads to cold traffic, and still cover ad cost with front end sales while bringing new people into your business.”
===
Which I’ll definitely be running experiments like that, and anyone who grabs 15LWS V1 now, will get a behind the scenes, over the shoulder look at how I’m doing that once V2 is released.
