Friendship accelerating secret learned from Dilbert creator, Scott Adams
For much of human history, survival depended upon having allies during conflict.
The ancestral world, much as I love to romanticize it, was under constant tension and recurring conflict between different groups even though fighting didn’t happen every single day.
But there was always that possibility.
And as a result…
We’ve developed highly sensitive mechanisms for determining who is on our side, and who is not. No so much in terms of battle these days, but in terms of general trust. Because, as you know, not everyone is always looking out for our best interest.
So in today’s email…
I want to reveal a secret I learned from Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, about how to help you form stronger bonds and strategic alliances with your readers using nothing but your words, written in an email such as this.
But before I reveal to you exactly how it works, I want to tell you a little secret about me.
One that will hopefully help you see that not everyone has things figured out all the time. And that most of us, are just throwing spaghetti at the wall and figuring things out as we go along.
Alright, are you ready?
Here’s something you might not know about me…
I started teaching online 2019, but I struggled like hell to turn it into my full time thing. I bounced back and forth between coaching, collabs, and construction for almost 3 1/2 years before I finally replaced my income well enough to hang up my tool belt for good.
Could be I’m a slow learner.
Could have been some old outworn mindset / identity stuff I had trouble shaking.
Could be that’s just what it takes to transition into something more or less completely different from what you were doing before.
Whatever the case may be, what finally pulled it altogether wasn’t some magic tactic.
It was picking a topic, getting obsessed with it, and writing about it every day like my life depended on it. If you do that long enough, you master the thing in public, and people begin to see you as the person worth learning it from.
And if you’re already an expert…
Daily writing is how you break the curse of knowledge and finally learn to speak to your people where they actually are.
Put simply…
Become a trusted advisor in your field, and you’ll be seen as one.
Sounds obvious on the surface, but underneath, there’s a lot more going on that we’re all constantly struggling to stay on top of and continuing to figure out.
And perhaps hearing all that gives you a bit of a sense that I trust you more.
That I’m willing to let you into my world, even just a little.
And that’s exactly the point I’m trying to make with today’s email. Because here’s where our brains start to do something interesting. When someone shares a secret with us, something vulnerable, something behind-the-scenes, something human…
Our nervous system starts to move that person from just a stranger to a potential ally.
And this is true for you too, when you write your emails, when you create your content, when you publish your podcast, and when share your story on sales calls and more.
When you let your guard down a little, when you give away information that you normally keep tucked away because you don’t want anyone to judge you, or to use it against you, or to hurt you, or betray you.
As long as you’re not over-sharing…
Instead of making yourself look foolish.
You’re actually rapidly building trust with whoever’s on the other end of that communication.
This is true in every single area of your life, your work, your relationships, your friend circles, your spiritual pursuits, and more… people instantly feel closer to you when you share something personal.
And that is why sharing your secrets is one of the fastest friendship-accelerators known to man.
So if you’re ever looking to build more trust with your readers, customers, clients, and more.
Just remember…
People start to label you a friend if you share a secret.
And if you want help sharing your secrets in a way that makes you more know-able, more like-able, and more trust-able to your future customers, colleagues, and clients…
