Nearly Psychic Self Promotion
Today’s email is about a powerful way to reveal surprising information about yourself.
One that make you sounds less like a braggart, and more like an experienced and enchanting educator.
Speaking of enchanting…
Later on in this email you’ll hear about a guy who swiped this tip from a magician, and used it to get people to read his emails all the way till the end, even if they hate magic, and magicians, and have absolutely no desire to learn anything from them.
But first, the magician.
His name is Ian Rowland.
And he wrote a book about something called “cold reading” (which is where this tip originally comes from).
Cold reading refers to performing different types psychic readings (without powers) mostly for entertainment purposes. It’s all about putting on a show, turning on the charm, and encouraging your client to be a willing participate in it.
It’s a parlor trick you might say.
Much like going to a magic show, you know you’re going to get fooled, but still you walk away wondering how they did it. But with cold reading, even though it’s sort of fake, most people walk away feeling better about themselves and their future.
So maybe there’s some real benefit to it after all.
Now this isn’t to say that psychic readings aren’t real or that they’re aren’t real psychics.
Just that these “cold reading psychics” are simply putting on a show. And there are many well to do people who are willing to participate in it, even though they know it’s a ruse.
So it’s no surprise, that this is probably one of the most charming ways I’ve seen to reveal personal information about yourself while still positioning yourself as an expert without sounding like a jerk.
But the other thing this little tip can do, is it makes it nearly impossible for your reader to NOT keep reading till the end.
It’s certain to drive your readers to the extremes of his or her curiosity.
So then, what’s the secret?
Well here it is in its un embellished form:
First you share the information as if it was about someone else. But then, in the end, reveal that the person you were talking about was you.
I’ll let the author, Ian Rowland, take it from here:
“Later on this book you will hear about a [cold reading] psychic who told a client the exact name of her brother without any guess work, clues, or prior information. In another case, a [cold reading] psychic accurately described the rather unusual job a client did 26 years previously. In both cases, I was the one giving the reading. How was I able to produce such amazingly specific information? All will be revealed later.”
So there you have it.
Now you have a new way to reveal information about yourself in a slightly more humble way, which still inspires your readers to action, while positioning yourself as the expert that can help them achieve their goals.
So by now I’m sure you might have guessed, that the guy I mentioned earlier who swiped this tip from a magician, was in fact me.
But what’s probably more interesting is, why would I bother buying a book about how to do fake psychic readings?
Well, I’m not sure I would.
Because it turns out I purchased the wrong book.
But I cracked it open anyway, and it just goes to show that it doesn’t really matter where you learn from because everything you encounter in life contains valuable lessons.
All to say, if you’d like to learn a bit more about how I manage to write these emails every single day, you can head on over to the currently free tier of my community and run yourself through my Highly Effective Emails training.
It won’t always be free. And I won’t claim that’s going to change soon, or that there’s some amount of urgency to it, just that it’s available for free now, but it won’t always be.
