Shameless way to get more clients than you could ever possibly handle
An important lesson for all the service providers out there.
This applies to so many industries, like copywriting, marketing, ad management, email marketing, etc… but also to agencies, educators, coaches and consultants as well.
It’s just that some services require more nuance than others.
But the main principle is the same.
And it’s a little trick I learned from arguably one of the most successful “digital writing as a business” operators alive on planet earth today.
He was Quora’s #1 most read writer in 2015. He owns the #1 and #2 paid newsletters in digital writing on Substack (which as a sidenote: I’m not a fan of, but for what he does and at his level it’s brilliant, however for people like you and me I think it’s a waste of time) — regardless, he’s done more than $10M+ in digital product sales, published several successful books on digital writing, and co-founded one of the biggest social media writing programs with over 10,000+ students participating.
I may not agree with everything he says or does, but there’s no doubt he’s a wildly successful entrepreneur.
And I think he owes it ALL to one powerful trait (which he happens to possess).
Which is tied to the effectiveness of the client-getting strategy I’m about to tell you.
First the trait, then the strategy…
The trait is, unshakeable confidence in his ability to get results for his clients.
It’s pretty incredible to watch if you ever get a chance. It’s the main reason you’ll see him consistently do work for free at the beginning of a new client relationship — because he knows that if he get’s someone a little bit of results for free, then buying from him becomes a no-brainer.
It’s the same reason you’ll see him, again, if you ever get the chance…
It’s the same reason that during a sales call when people are flip-flopping around all over the place about what they think they want…
It’s the same reason he has an uncanny ability to refocus their attention on why and how his solution is the most effective for helping them achieve their goals (even if they think they need some other wrong solution that won’t actually help them achieve their goals).
It all comes back to his unwavering confidence in his ability to produce lead generating and conversion creating assets for his clients.
Of course, he doesn’t do that so much anymore…
Now he just teaches others to write and build businesses around writing.
But if you’re interested in that, he’s a good person to learn from.
He’s done it successfully for more than a decade, and he’s not some overnight guru who made a few thousand dollars writing one time and now wants to teach you to do the same. One of the reasons why I took this lesson to heart when he shared it with me inside his Premium Ghostwriting Academy.
And it’s a strategy that will ensure you have die-hard, committed clients for the rest of your life (without fail) — as long as you stick to the plan.
So what is the plan you ask?
Well, I’m glad you asked…
The plan is simple.
Here it is:
“Follow up until they call the cops.”
If they say nothing… follow up until they call the cops. If they say maybe… follow up until they call the cops. If they say yes but don’t pay… follow up until they call the cops. If they say not right now… follow up until they call the cops. If they say no… follow up until they call the cops.
And that last one might surprise you…
But here’s the truth…
9 times out of 10, people don’t even know why they’re saying no. Sometimes it’s an automatic defense mechanism, they don’t feel if they engage in a conversation they can resist common persuasion techniques well enough to maintain their autonomy during a more detailed discussion with you.
That’s fine…
That’s where some people are at…
But there’s often a way to reach through to people, in a totally human, non-aggressive, non-pushy way that cuts through those automatic barricades we have, especially to unsolicited outreach messages. But here’s the deal… this is gonna sound cliché because you’ve heard this one before, but it’s worth hearing again right now in this moment because it’s important.
You don’t know what you don’t know.
Case-in-point…
I do direct unsolicited outreach at times for my writing services.
Why?
Because there’s businesses out there that I’d just love to work with some day, but they have no idea what the problem is with their marketing unless someone tells them. And if that person is me, and it’s done properly, that means there’s a good chance they’ll decide to work with me.
That’s how you land contracts with people who might never approach you otherwise.
Anyway…
In this instance, I had someone join my email list and reach out to me about how to solve their email marketing problem. And so I gave ‘em some info and followed up a few times, but they got mad. They “called the cops” if you will, and threw a spear at me and tried to guilt and shame me into not doing follow up anymore or something.
That’s fine.
I dodged the arrows, decided we’re still friends, and in the end my version of reality is the one that came true.
But alternatively, I’ve done outreach to people who DID NOT reach out to me in the first place, and as I continue to sign paid contracts with them… one of the things they consistently thank me for is my relentless follow up.
I never drop the ball.
And I keep following up.
Why?
Because people with money are busy.
And they might not be ready at the exact moment you want them to be ready. But eventually, they will be ready.
And so…
That’s the lesson for today.
Follow up until they call the cops.
Because no one is going to throw you in prison for being kind, helpful, polite, persistent, confident, reliable, and trustworthy.
It just ain’t gonna happen.
So that’s it for today.
