Write your damn emails!

I was on a call recently with a client who said they hadn't been writing their emails.

I get it.

Life gets busy.

The inspiration isn’t there, you sit down and nothing comes out, or you’re not sure what to say and it just keeps getting pushed till tomorrow.

I understand all of that, but I also don’t care. Neither does your list. And neither should you.

Here’s why:

Imagine you just bought a new car. And you really like driving it because it gets you from point a to point b much faster than walking, or biking, or riding a train. Then also imagine that you decided you really didn’t like stopping to put gas in it.

So you drive around, you get busy, you avoid it, you convince yourself you’ll get to it tomorrow.

And for a while, nothing happens.

You keep driving.

But at some point, maybe its in a couple days, or maybe its in a week, eventually you’re going to be stuck, broken down on the side of the highway, and you’re going to be frustrated because now you have to walk, and it’s all because you didn’t feel like putting gas in your car.

Well that’s what writing your emails is to running an online business.

Ask anyone.

I don’t know a single person who’s successful at it that’s willing to run their business without one.

It’s not that you can’t do it. You can, but in the long run, you’re at the mercy of whatever platform you’re relying on to keep you around, display your content, permit you the favor of their algorithms, etc… (and I don’t say that to scare you, it’s just as a matter of logistics).

If you’re going to invest a bunch of time and effort into building good will through content, nothing is as timeless irrevocable as email.

Anyway, all to say, if you stop writing emails, it’s like not filling your tank and hoping the gas just keeps going forever.

But a week goes by, a month goes by, and people start to forget who you are.

They move on, they open someone else’s emails instead.

And when you decide to show back up maybe a few months later, the relationship is cold and you have to start all over.

Content too.

Every email you don't send, every post you don't write, that's gas you didn't put in the tank. And your business runs on it whether you feel like filling it up or not.

Your feelings are irrelevant.

So are mine.

But the good news is, once you get good at these things, they become easy and pleasurable.

Just like everything else in life.

And you don’t have to be inspired. You just have to sit down and write your damn email. Or you can do it whilst on a walking pad, which is what I do. Anyway, that’s why I put together the Highly Effective Emails writing guide. So that even on days when you just don’t feel like it, you’ll always have something to write about.
