You can't change the world (but here's what you can do instead)

In my early twenties, I lived in an anarchist housing collective.

We gardened.

Raised chickens and bees.

Hosted punk shows and art events.

And genuinely spent our time trying to build something outside the system. Many who visited where “anti-capitalist” while those of us who actually ran the place all had jobs (I was renovating old houses at the time).

And while the goal was often to “need less money” the paradox is, the less we focused on earning it, the more we always “needed” it.

We probably thought we were changing the world, sticking it to the man, and building a revolution one back-yard garden at a time.

But looking back now?

We weren’t changing the world at all… we were doing something entirely different.

I recently came across a quote from George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, my favorite movie series of all time that put it perfectly:

"You can't change the world, you can only make your own and invite others in."

There’s something romantic about going against the grain, doing things differently, and I still always feel that pull. But I’ve realized that entrepreneurship is the grown-up version of that same desire for freedom.

Not freedom from responsibility, but freedom through it.

Because instead of trying to exist on your own by skirting conventions and exploiting the loopholes… but through finding success in entrepreneurship, you’re forced to make a meaningful contribution. Something other people will willingly take part in, and vote with their hard earned money for.

Something we managed to do successfully while hosting punk shows in the theatre attached to our house…

$5 donation at the door.

People paid it.

Because they believed in it.

And that’s the challenge of being an entrepreneur.

Can you build something people are willing to believe in? And the first person you’re going to have to convince is yourself.

So that’s my goal for you inside The Nature of Marketing.

Learning to build something worth believing in.

And at the time of writing this, you can still get lifetime free access to the community by joining now.
