Find your writing style by forgetting it altogether

Most people think there's some archaic secret to finding your writing style.

That after writing some large number of words per day for many months on end, or that by gaining access to some legendary power word thesaurus, they'll have some unique high leverage access to their readers' minds that they didn't have before.

Total B.S.

Instead what you need to do is forget about style altogether.

It sounds counterintuitive, but that’s exactly what I learned from William Zinsser. And if you’ve never heard of him, you should know he wrote the book On Writing Well, which has been the go-to guide for writers, journalists, and marketers for over 50+ years.

It's sold over 1.5 million copies and is still required reading at many of the top universities in America.

His work shaped how an entire generation learned to write with clarity, simplicity, and humanity. And if you've ever read anything that felt effortless to consume, Zinsser probably influenced it.

So when someone like that tells you to eliminate style, it's worth paying attention.

Here's why it matters for you:

Last week I was on a call with TNM community member Abbey Page, and she said her biggest bottleneck was perfectionism and overthinking when creating content.

She'd start writing something, second-guess it, abandon it, and never finish.

Sound familiar?

That's what happens when you try to write with "style."

You get caught up trying to sound smart, trying to sound professional, or trying to sound creative and you end up paralyzed. Or worse, you end up sounding like every other overhyped, cheesy marketer out there.

But when you eliminate style and just write like yourself, something changes…

Your spirit is allowed to shine through. Your writing becomes effortless to read. And ironically, that's when you actually stand out.

I’ve just released Legendary Writing Secret #4 inside The Nature of Marketing community, and it shows you precisely how I’ve done this with my own writing.

Inside you'll discover:

  • Why trying to have "style" actually stifles your unique voice.
  • How to write with simplicity and sincerity (so people actually feel you).
  • Real examples of Threads posts using this approach and got hundreds or even thousands of likes.
  • The psychological origins of writer's block (and how to break free).

This lesson will change the way you approach every post, email, and piece of content you create.

And you can apply it to your writing and start getting results as soon as today.
