What’s something you want your audience to know about you?
Something that doesn’t fit yet in your marketing?
Something that makes you stand out, and makes you different from everyone else in your space… but you haven’t yet figured out how to make it your unique edge?
I’ll go first…
In my early twenties, I lived in an anarchist housing collective.
We gardened, raised chickens and bees, hosted punk shows and art events.
Then had a health scare that catapulted me out of the drinking, smoking, and alternative partying scene of my youth and into the “primal health optimization” phase of my 30s, and now 40s.
And for the longest time, I had no idea what to do with those parts of my story.
It never fit the construction business I was running and it never fit the “professional marketer” image either. Something I often talked about with active clients, but felt to weird to lead with my messaging.
But here’s the thing…
Those experiences are part of what makes me different from every other marketing coach out there.
It’s why I care about autonomy and trust-based marketing over high-pressure tactics and smoke & mirrors advertising. It’s also why I attract the kind of clients I actually want to work with today.
Which brings me to the point of today’s email…
There's something about you that doesn't fit yet in your marketing.
Something that makes you different. Something that, if you owned it and wove it into your positioning, would make you the only logical choice for a specific kind of person.
Most people try to sand down their edges to fit in.
Or they chase "better"…
But better what?
Better features? Better pricing? Better results? Better copy?
As a result, they end up looking exactly like everyone else in their space.
Seth Godin says, if you optimize any website enough it eventually becomes… well… something better off not mentioning here. But the point is, the smartest positioning doesn’t come from being better than your competitors. It comes from being the only one who does what you do, the way you do it, for the people you serve.
Take Tad Hargrave for example…
He didn't try to be the best marketing consultant in the world. Instead he created something called, Marketing For Hippies.
Now, sure, there might be other hippies out there who teach marketing (ahem). But he got there first, so now he owns that space. He took something that made him different, something that might've felt a bit too niche or a bit too weird, and he made it his entire positioning. At least that was the case 10 years ago or so when he adopted the name.
But the point is, here’s what happens when you find your freaky intersection…
You stop competing on price, you stop competing on features, you stop having to worry about every new tactic or trend.
And instead, you become the obvious choice for your people.
The people who need exactly what you offer, delivered exactly the way you deliver it, and can’t seem to find anywhere else.
So what about you?
What's something you want your audience to know about you that doesn't fit yet in your marketing?
Maybe it’s a past career that shaped how you see your industry? Or a personal value that influences how you work with clients? Or an unconventional background that gives you unique insights? Or maybe a combination of skills that nobody else in your space has?
Whatever it is, that’s your edge.
The thing that makes you unmistakable. And the sooner you stop hiding it and start building your marketing around it, the sooner you stop chasing and start choosing your ideal clients.
