I have a confession to make…
A while back, my dad introduced my girlfriend and I to a show called Only Murders in the Building on Hulu.
And we liked the story so much that one day we started binge-watching it.
There we are…
Bodies sore, brains tired, but we couldn’t stop watching!
Now I don’t watch much TV, but when I do, half of me is enjoying it and the other half me is working. Because I’m always on the look out for inspiration on how to help you get and hold attention for your online business.
So by the time we watched our 3rd episode in a row…
I realized what was happening.
Something that might be one of the most effective, yet overlooked, attention-getting principles known to man. And it seems so obvious once you’ve identified it that I couldn’t help but ask:
Why didn’t I notice this sooner?
Looking back, I tried to use this principle early on in my marketing. But it was purely out of trying to imitate what I thought worked well on me. I didn’t necessarily understand how powerful it was, or how to use it right.
But there we were…
Sitting in bed, watching Steve Martin get comically hammered over and over again by the elevator doors when it dawned on me.
I read about this before in one of Robert Cialdini’s books.
Back when he was professor at university he was often frustrated by how difficult it was to get his students to devote their full attention to the class material. Eager to find a solution, he checked out every non-fiction book he could think of and took notes on how to get and hold attention.
Here’s what he learned…
The author’s that got the most attention, all used this same attention-getting principle.
A principle that Albert Einstein once said was both “the most beautiful thing we can experience” and “the source of all true science and art”.
And the reason I hadn’t noticed it sooner was because of how effective it really was. When you use it properly, it's nearly impossible for your reader to remain an outside observer to things like writing elements or story structure.
Because it just pulls you in.
And even though my subconscious mind picked up on it and tried to recreate it in my marketing, it wasn’t until I fully understood what was going on that I was able to start using it effectively.
Whereas before…
I’d just get sucked in and never really realize what was happening.
And that’s the hallmark of great marketing.
You know it when you don’t see it.
This principle, when used properly, tends to skyrocket your email response rate. And I’m using it to get dozens of hands raised for my clients inside my Simple Email Sales Accelerator.
