The Genius of Jack and Meg White
I still remember exactly where I was the first time I heard one of their songs play on the radio.
High school.
Back of my friends car.
Heading to pick the rest of our crew.
We were invincible.
The White Stripes had only two members, but sounded huge.
They favored reel-to-reel tape over digital recordings. They pretended to be siblings when in reality, they were married and then divorced. And they forever featured 3 colors only:
Red, white, and black.
They never had fancy light shows or huge video screens. In fact, everything they did felt raw, nostalgic, and old school.
But they won 4 Grammy’s, multiple MTV video music awards, multiple NME awards, and their album Elephant was named one of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. And beyond that, their song Seven Nation Army has become arguably one of the most recognizable riffs ever created.
Which is why I’m writing you today.
Because after my girlfriend left the house this morning, that song popped into my head. No idea why. I haven’t heard it in years.
But there I am, singin’ it...
“A seven nation army couldn’t hold me back…”
And a few minutes later, I’m checking and responding to my messages across various social media platforms when this White Stripes video pops across my feed. Some might think, “algorithms are creepy”. But I say, “there are no coincidences”.
That’s the universe speaking to you.
So I bite.
And I end up watching a video about the real genius of Meg White’s drumming and how it helped shape the band into becoming the iconic, award winning duo that it was. Because a lot of drummers focus on complexity.
And there’s really something amazing about that.
But not Meg.
It’s all the notes she didn’t play that helped them reach such epic levels of stardom that most modern musicians will only ever dream of. It’s all the notes that she didn’t play that caused drama and controversy to spread rampantly across the music community…
From — “She’s a terrible drummer!”
To — “No she’s a genius!”
And as result, they created a captive audience and raving fans… for life.
They decided not to do what everyone else was doing, and to do something different.
Which is precisely why if you want to be truly successful in life, I recommend you take a long hard look at at what everyone else around you is doing, and do the opposite.
Something to think about on this auspicious afternoon.
